Itinerary

Enjoy an extraordinary journey through the heart of Morocco with our shared 3-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech. Experience the thrill of Morocco’s desert landscapes as you travel over mighty mountains, discovering rustic villages, verdant valleys, and the hypnotic Sahara Desert.

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Ziz Valley – Sahara Desert Trek.

Your adventure begins when your Sahara Holiday Tours experienced English-speaking guide takes you on a tour of the magical ancient medina of Fes, where you will explore the city’s fascinating history, rich culture, and architectural marvels. After lunch, you’ll set off south, ascending into the mighty Atlas Mountains, and soon reaching the pretty Berber town of Ifrane. Ifrane is known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” as its buildings are constructed in a Swiss alpine style of architecture. Here, you will see The Lion of Ifrane, a large statue made by Italian prisoners during the Second World War.

Driving on through fragrant cedar forests, across the high plains, and descending through the lush Ziz Valley, rich in date palm groves and quaint Berber villages, you’ll see the dunes of the Erg Chebbi long before you reach the Berber town of Merzouga. Here, at the base of the dunes, camels are readied, waiting for an unforgettable trek as the sun sets like a burning globe beneath the sands of the Sahara Desert. You’ll arrive at a tented Berber encampment nestled among the dunes and enjoy a scrumptious meal with the Berber people, then sit around the campfire exchanging your life stories, watching the endless blanket of stars in the night sky and falling asleep in your comfortable tent under the silver disc of the moon.

Day 2: Sahara – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley.

Awaken literally before the crack of dawn as you watch the stunning spectacle of the sunrise over Erg Chebbi before breakfast and a return camel ride through the shifting shadows as the sun rises to Merzouga, where you switch to your motorized transport and depart for Rissani. Explore this historic town with its bustling souks and ancient monuments, including the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif. Its markets provide a great opportunity to stock up on your souvenirs as they offer a wide range of local handicrafts at prices much cheaper than in the big cities.

After lunch is a fun drive through the narrow Todra Gorge, a natural wonder with sheer cliffs that offer stunning views and opportunities for exploration. Beyond this is the delightful Dades Valley. You’ll be awed by the dramatic, multi-coloured rock formations and fertile oases that line this spectacular valley. Spend the night here in a splendid hotel.

Day 3: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – Marrakech.

After breakfast, on the third day of your tour, you’ll depart the valley and head for Marrakech, but with some worthwhile stops on the way. First is Ouarzazate, “The Hollywood of Africa”, where movies and TV series are made, such as “Lawrence of Arabia”,” Indiana Jones “, and “Game of Thrones”. Have a look at some sets you may recognize and visit the museum of props. Next, you will stop off at the fortified hilltop ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its historical significance and architectural splendour, thus often used as the backdrop to the Hollywood movies made in Ouarzazate. Explore the kasbahs and visit the museum in the fort at the hill’s summit.

In the early evening, you’ll reach Marrakech. Bid adieu to your new friend, your Sahara Holiday Tours’ guide and driver, when he drops you off at your hotel or riad in the Red City.
